Navigating Projects

This week we were tasked to research different online programs that would help with the management process. According to Dr. Stolovitch "Working as a PM is similar to being a traffic conductor, you have to manage people, resources, budgets, activity, and so on."  (Walden, n.d).  Dr. Stolovitch also used a similar analogy when it comes to project management, describing it as a "highway" of sorts. So to help us navigate and monitor the high traffic of our projects, we have to use effective systems, much like one would use a GPS to navigate.

The overall goal of any system tool is to make work streamlined and efficient. Two tools I discovered this week are Float (https://www.float.com/) and Figma (www.figma.com). Both sites aid in project management but in very unique ways.

I discovered float.com while I was reading through the instructional design Reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/instructionaldesign/comments/g1l63h/start_here_new_or_interested_in_instructional/. While a specific designer did not mention it, float.com was advertised on this specific subreddit. Float seems to be in competition with other sites such as asana.com or monday.com. They all tend to offer some method of creating and managing a team. While I have yet to explore either Asana or Monday, one thing that I like about Float is the time management sheet. Below the main schedule, you have a sheet where your teammates can sign in and out and you can monitor how much time is being spent on a certain activity. Like Dr. Stolovitch mentioned "Time is a resource we cannot get back, so we have to make decisions on the activities we choose since those activities eat up time." ( Walden, n.d) Since float allows you to see the time being used, you are given a better position to monitor and choose other activities as needed.

Another resource I found this week is figma.com. Unlike float and other similar spreadsheet sites, figma is a user-friendly customizable board.  Figma can help teams visualize or blueprint a project from start to finish and it allows multiple people to collaborate on the board in real-time. It includes an array of widgets to help keep team members accountable. I personally use figma when I am planning out different work projects, so I can understand how my resources and time are being spent.

Whether it be a board or smart sheet, Program managers have to have a tool that is systematic, clear, and concise to manage the traffic that is their project.

    Hi Justin,
I also like the float site you chose because of the ability to forecast budgets, create schedules, allocate resources, and monitor the effort placed into each task (Float, 2023). This would provide accurate information in terms of the duration of each task and encourage the team members to consider and maintain the budget.
Figma is also a good software for team members to collaborate with each other to work on different areas of the project. Templates are also provided to make the process a little easier rather than starting to design from scratch.
