Don't be a creep: My Misadventures with Scope Creep in the K-12 Setting!

Image
Hi all! So, as a reminder, I am a teacher in an undisclosed district here in the great Houston, Texas.  I wanted to give you a bit a context before I began sharing this story of "creepiness."  I have taught now for seven years, including COVID years and have worked at two districts. Simply put, education is a bit of a mess right now. There is, in my opinion, a misalignment between vision, mission, goal, and execution. That is where the scope creep seeps in. Scope creep occurs when a project acquires new, unauthorized features that potentially disrupt a project's budget, timeline, scale, or other major points (Larson,2009). Out of an abundance of caution and respect, the district, school, and parties involved have all been made up, although the story is true. I work as a math teacher at Tamela Mann Middle Charter School. It is one of the most difficult middle schools to get into in the city since the school provides high-level advanced placement courses and national...

Having tools to help manage projects is essential to project managers and all parties involved.  The overall point of these tools is not to be a crutch but rather to help streamline most of the nuances involved in the project.  The two tools I want to present are Monday.com and figma.com.     Figma.com is a user-friendly customizable board. Figma helps teams see the larger picture by allowing them to use customizable widgets and other tools to create maps.  By allowing for the creation of the “blueprint” of the project, different teams can see the start and end goals of the project and add any input to the blueprint.  I use Figma to help visualize large projects so I can see the “flow” of the project and the minor components of each project.     The next resource that I would like to share is Monday.com. I know that Monday.com is advertised often, but it is an awesome tool for project managers. Monday.com sets up project mana...

The Art of Effective Communication

Image
image copyright: https://neuroleadership.com/your-brain-at-work/three-steps-for-communicating-better-according-to-neuroscience  As social creatures, we rely heavily on communication, both verbal and nonverbal. These methods carry significant weight in how our messages are conveyed. When we communicate, it's crucial to be mindful of our body language, tone, speed of speech, and eye contact. These subtle cues play a pivotal role in conveying important information (Stolovitch, n.d). During week 3, we were presented with a media piece, 'The Art of Effective Communication.' This piece demonstrated how the same message can be delivered in three different formats, each significantly altering the context and understanding of the message. This highlights the importance of adapting our communication methods to suit the situation.  The first method was via email. Reading the email, the message seemed as if there was a sense of urgency. While she recognized that he may have ha...

EDUC 6145: WEEK 6 Scope Creep

Image
Describe a project, either personal or professional, that experienced issues related to scope creep. What specific scope creep issues occurred? How did you or other stakeholders deal with those issues at the time? Looking back on the experience now, had you been in the position of managing the project, what could you have done to better manage these issues and control the scope of the project?                                                                              image source: Zentao Scope creep occurs when a project acquires new, unauthorized features that potentially disrupt the budget, timeline, scale, or other major points of a project (Larson, 2009). For me, scope creep occurred at the very start of the 2022-2023 school year. For context, I was starting at a public school here ...

EDUC 6145 WK5 Budget tracking

Money is a finite resource in most projects. Knowing where this resource is used and how it is being used is of the utmost importance for PMs. As we learned in the resources this week; suggesting, implementing, using, and tracking a budget is very important. Fortunately, there are a number of programs that exist to help assist PMs with "following the money."  According to Carrol (2022), a solid project budget and resource management tool can make managing a project go easier. PMs, should use project management software to automate budgets and report accurate data. A good program would also provide data so that PMs can make adjustments to the project.  I looked into float.com and smart sheets again this week to identify how they help with budgets. Float.com: With float, the process of tracking budgets clearly was apart of its most recent updates. According to Prator (2023), a developer at Float, the project budgets will allow users to plan, set, and track project hours a...

Navigating Projects                                                     Image source:https://trackimo.com/live-map-tracking-system/  This week we were tasked to research different online programs that would help with the management process. According to Dr. Stolovitch "Working as a PM is similar to being a traffic conductor, you have to manage people, resources, budgets, activity, and so on."  (Walden, n.d).  Dr. Stolovitch also used a similar analogy when it comes to project management, describing it as a "highway" of sorts. So to help us navigate and monitor the high traffic of our projects, we have to use effective systems, much like one would use a GPS to navigate. The overall goal of any system tool is to make work streamlined and efficient. Two tools I discovered this week are Float (https://www.float.com/) and Figma (www.figma.com). Both...

Hi all! Hope you are doing well!      How we communicate is important and there are a ton of different things at play as we communicate information. In our resources this week, Dr. Stolovitch made the statement that it's not what we are communicating but how we are communicating. Are we paying attention to our body language, tone, speed of speech, eye contact, etc.?  These minute details come into play as we communicate important information.  There is so much research and literature surrounding this topic, even entire classes dedicated to it! So this week we were tasked to listen and receive a message in three different modalities for the assignment " The Art of Effective Communication." In the presentation, we are given the same message from the same person in three different ways.  The first method was via email. As I read the message, it felt that the person who wrote it knew Mark well enough to make a small joke while getting her intent ac...
